Cryogenic ion milling cross-section processing example (rubber products)

We will introduce a case study on the method of processing cross-sections using toy car tires!

We would like to introduce a case where cross-sections were created and observed for the adhesive parts of pull-back car tires using different methods. Upon conducting SEM observations of the created cross-sections, fillers present within the rubber were confirmed. It was found that the dispersion state of the fillers and the appearance of the adhesive interface were not clear with liquid nitrogen fracturing or mechanical polishing. [Example] Observation of the surface cross-section of anodized aluminum.

Gold is about 10μm, light gold is about 7μm, and silver is around 12 to 13μm! Here are some examples of cross-sectional observations.

We would like to introduce a case study conducted at our company regarding three types of anodized products sold as tableware: gold, light gold, and silver, which were investigated from both the surface and cross-section. By creating a cross-section of the anodized coating through ion milling and measuring its thickness, we found that the gold was approximately 10μm, the light gold was about 7μm, and the silver was around 12 to 13μm. Additionally, it was confirmed that the difference in the intensity of the gold color (the difference between gold and light gold) is due to the variation in film thickness. Observation of the cross-sectional shape of the resist pattern.

Multiple patterns of cross-sectional shapes with a wide range (approximately 3mm wide) can be observed in high detail!

We would like to introduce our "Observation of Resist Pattern Cross-Sectional Shapes." In the evaluation of the quality of resist patterns formed in complex three-dimensional shapes, we utilize ion milling technology equipped with a sample cooling mechanism and a three-axis ion source to perform cross-sectional processing without damage on heat-sensitive resist pattern samples. This allows for high-resolution observation of the cross-sectional shapes of multiple patterns over a wide area (approximately 3mm in width). Effects of heat generated during cross-section ion milling (CP) processing.

We would like to present the results of our observations on the production of cross-sections of rubber products and a comparison of cross-section production methods!

We will introduce a case study comparing cross-section preparation methods on the surface coating layer of a golf ball and observing the effects of heat from CP processing. There are two layers of coating on the outermost layer of the cover layer, and we conducted a comparison of cross-section preparation methods using this coating layer. SEM observations of the cross-sections prepared using three different methods were performed. While cross-section preparation of soft materials is effectively done using cross-section ion milling (CP), the physical properties may change due to the heat generated during CP processing. Observation of the fine structure of alumite.

By using the ion milling method, it is possible to confirm the cross-sectional structure and distribution of elements without damaging the fine structure!

We would like to introduce our "Observation of the Microstructure of Anodized Aluminum." Aluminum materials in commercially available frames form an anodic oxide film (anodizing) on the surface for purposes such as corrosion resistance and wear resistance. In general mechanical polishing processes, the pore structure of the anodized layer can be destroyed, making it impossible to confirm its structure. By using ion milling (Ar+ ion beam) for processing, we can observe the cross-sectional structure and elemental distribution without damaging the microstructure. 【Elemental Distribution Analysis by EPMA】 ■ The microstructure of the anodized layer can be clearly observed through SEM observation. ■ It can be confirmed that the pores are neatly filled due to sealing treatment. ■ By combining elemental analysis, we can also confirm the distribution of Sn (tin), which is thought to have precipitated due to electrolytic coloring on the lower side of the anodized layer, as well as the distribution of S residues in the sulfuric acid bath (H2SO4). *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.
